Teachers starting to speak out in Kentucky

No, I didn’t create the title for this blog. It comes from an article written by Jeff Jobe, editor of Jobe Publishing Company. This article ran in that firm’s multiple newspapers that that cover the Barren, Butler, Metcalfe, Monroe and Hart County areas. Examples include the Hart County News Herald and The Barren County Progress. This Op-Ed is available to you online as the 9-16-14 entry in Jeff Jobe’s blog.

I think this article is remarkable. Very simply, Mr. Jobe opens the lid on a box I think some would like to keep tightly shut.

The new development: Kentucky’s teachers are now upset enough about the impacts of the Common Core State Standards that they are voicing their concerns to newspapers right here in the Bluegrass State. There has to be a serious problem before our teachers open up to the press like that.

Writing as a shocked parent, Mr. Jobe highlights one example of a skill Common Core does not require, cursive writing. He does a great job describing the impacts of that omission in his own family, so I will simply refer you to his blog linked above to read that moving story.

I am hoping to learn more about other complaints teachers are beginning to voice about Common Core. That process does not come easily in education, where teachers have well justified fears about speaking out.

However, the fact that teachers anywhere in the state are riled enough about Common Core to even talk to news people is a stunning development. If you know of other teachers speaking out about problems related to the Common Core State Standards, we would like to hear about that.
