Courier headline gets Kentucky’s ACT story wrong
The Courier-Journal issued a story today titled, “ACT scores remain unchanged from 2011.”
That is correct for the nationwide ACT results, but Kentucky’s scores actually improved.
In fact, as I will report at 9 AM Eastern time this morning in this blog, the ACT Composite Score for Kentucky rose from 19.6 in 2011 to 19.8 for the graduates of the Class of 2012. Considering that 100 percent of the graduates in Kentucky took the ACT in both years, that is progress for our state, but the Courier didn’t list the Kentucky results for 2011, so no-one reading the article can learn that.
Our leading newspaper owes a lot of teachers, students and taxpayers who fund our schools an apology.
The newspaper did get some facts correct. The scores “still aren’t great.” In fact, we have a very long way to go.
But, to get the details, you’d better check for our blog series that starts releasing this morning in just a few minutes. It looks like news coverage on the scores isn’t going to be all that hot.
