Kentucky’s commissioner of education favors charter schools!

School Choice Week - Legalize School Choice Logos

This CN|2 report says Kentucky Commissioner of Education Terry Holliday is in favor of charter schools for Kentucky.

Holliday knows there are now outstanding examples of charter school successes. CN|2 quotes Holliday asking:

“What are these outstanding charter schools doing that we could bring to these districts of innovation in Kentucky?”

That is a great question.

Holliday’s desire for charter schools might be driven in part by a sharp reduction in interest in the “Districts of Innovation” that former state representative Carl Rollins had enacted as an alternative to charter schools.

In Round 1 of the Districts of Innovation competition last year, 16 districts applied, but only four were selected.

Now, in round 2, just four districts even bothered to apply, and only 3 are being recommended for addition to the program.

Clearly, the excitement that created thousands of charter schools across the county seems to be lacking in the Districts of Innovation program. Kentucky’s students deserve better choices than the limited Districts of Innovation are supplying. It’s well past time for the state to enact real charter school legislation.
