New standards won’t improve education???

If it wasn’t coming from the respected Brookings Institution, I would have dismissed a fairly recent report as uninformed fussing.

But, Education Week says a February 2012 Brookings report claims, “The common standards will have little effect on student achievement.” EdWeek says, per Brookings, “It's curriculum, not standards, that can make an impact on student achievement.”

Find the Brookings report here.

I plan to spend some time in this one, as it uses the National Assessment of Educational Progress to make its case. I wonder if the report only looked at overall scores for all students in each state (which could be a major mistake).

If the findings pan out, they have major implications for Kentucky, which is expending considerable effort on the new standards and associated school assessments.
