Yet another Tweet has surfaced with easily challenged claims about education funding in Kentucky. The claim: Funding for education in Kentucky from local and state sources fell after 2008.Well, once again, the data from the Kentucky Department of Education’s revenue and expenditures reports for 2007-08 and 2017-18 show something different.

The table below tells the tale.

As you can see, both local and state revenue per pupil increased over the past 10 years, and it even increased by over $2,600 in constant, inflation-adjusted dollars after adjustment with the very neat CPI Inflation Calculator.

And, the table above is based on audited, real data from the Kentucky Department of Education, not some budget projections that apparently don’t work out once real accountants look at what really happens.

BUT, this is not to say the money is well spent. Over at the Prichard Blog, Susan Weston just analyzed data in a report from the Kentucky Office of Education Accountability.

Susan says:

“In districts with multiple schools, schools with the most low-income students do not consistently receive the most money.”

Someone needs to look at that, ASAP!

So, right now, let’s just say we need to REALLY look at where Kentucky’s education money is going before we throw a lot more dollars into a system that might not know how to use that money well.
