Outrageously bad Common Core math test from New York draws Washington Post’s ire
Are similar tests being used in Kentucky?
The Washington Post’s chief education blogger, Valerie Strauss, is drawing considerable attention to nuts and bolts problems with the implementation of the Common Core State Standards. She posted “A ridiculous Common Core test for first graders” a little over a week ago. It is actually written by the School Administrators Association of New York’s 2013 High School Principal of the Year. Principal Carol Burris makes a stunning case that actual Common Core materials showing up in first grade classrooms are indeed, “ridiculous.”
Be sure to look at the actual test that caught Burris’ attention. Some of the questions will stump adults and clearly are way beyond what newly entered first grade students should have to work with.
By the way, this test could well be circulating in Kentucky, too. It comes from education publishing giant Pearson Education, Inc., which happens to be a British-owned company that has made an enormous penetration into the US education system (Do we need a little more “Revolutionary” spirit in the good old USA again?).
If you know of similar, off-the-wall educational materials being used in the Bluegrass State, please let me know.
