It’s School Choice Week, and we badly need more choice in Kentucky

School Choice Week - Legalize School Choice Logos

Today kicks off the national school choice week, and as part of the Bluegrass Institute’s observations we will be featuring a series of videos on school choice issues of interest here in Kentucky.

Of course, our biggest choice issue in the Bluegrass State is that we have just about the worst school choice programs of any state in the nation. While 42 states now have public charter schools, which offer parents an alternative choice from traditional public schools, Kentucky has yet to enact the required legislation. That is partly due to the fact that many Kentucky citizens still don’t know much about these public school options that are also public schools.

So, let us take this week to bring you (and your friends – please share the links) up to speed on what charter schools are and how they could benefit Kentucky.

Introducing our video series, we’ll let Dr. Wayne Lewis, Ph.D., who is a UK professor with lots of background in charter schools, explain what charter schools actually are.
