Here’s a really good, 10-minute discussion about the problems with teaching reading in K-12 schools

There is only one comment I don’t fully agree with. Poverty isn’t an excuse for not teaching reading, and there is evidence from right here in Kentucky. For more on that, see my recent report about “Reading proficiency rates rising in some Appalachian schools.”

Given the right teaching methods, it is possible to generate Grade 3 reading proficiency rates on Kentucky’s state assessments of 90% despite school-wide poverty, based on school lunch eligibility, of 85%.
