KYTC awarded $45.1 million in single-bid contracts exceeding their engineer's estimates in July
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) awarded 18 single-bid contracts exceeding their internal estimates to Kentucky’s highway contractors in July. The single-bid awards totaled $45,100,414 — costing taxpayers $2,887,581.46 above and beyond the estimated costs for those projects.
L-M Asphalt Partners was awarded four single-bid contracts last month. Their haul totaled $17,976,018 — including a $1.07 million award for “various routes in Clay County.” L-M’s bids exceeded KYTC’s internal estimates for the four projects by $1,373,563.
Hinkle Contracting secured four single-bid contracts totaling $2,479,654, which exceeded the Cabinet’s estimates by $146,264. Hinkle’s largest single-bid award for the month was $1.29 million for “various routes in Pulaski County.”
KYTC awarded Mountain Enterprises one single-bid contract in July. The company’s $570,854 bid was $82,521 higher than the engineer’s estimate for a US 119 project in Letcher County.
The Allen Company was awarded two single-bid contracts (exceeding the Cabinet’s estimates) totaling $5,008,742. The Rogers Group also scored two single-bid awards on bids higher than the estimated costs for the projects. The Allen Company and Rogers Group contracts added up to $4,394,404.
Five more Kentucky highway contractors were each awarded a single-bid contract in July:
Scotty’s Contracting: $12,988,648 for “asphalt pavement and roadway rehab” on the Louis B Nunn Cumberland Parkway.
Murray Paving: $216,987 for a KY 1918 project in Calloway County.
Mago Construction: $554,056 for 7.06 miles of “asphalt resurfacing” in Wayne County.
Haydon Materials: $564,295 for “various routes in Marion County.”
Gaddie-Shamrock: $391,753 for “various routes in Russell County.”
A back of the envelope calculation indicates KYTC has awarded 102 single-bid contracts (that exceeded their engineer’s estimates) totaling $115 million to Kentucky’s road contractors since January 2021.
In July, KYTC awarded single-bid contracts for projects in the following counties: Clark, Christian, Scott, Fayette, Laurel, Letcher, Barren/Metcalf, Logan, Calloway, Owsley, Wayne, Breathitt, Casey, Clay, Lincoln, Marion, Pulaski and Russell.
