Quote of the Day – Plus

“I don’t think people understand the war.”

Jim Hellard, Kentucky World War II veteran

Quote from: “A soldier, his Nazi dog, the Battle of the Bulge. A Kentucky WW II veteran looks back,” Lexington Herald-Leader, October 6, 2023

But why should younger Kentucky citizens understand anything about this era?

After all, even the brand-new edition of the Kentucky Department of Education’s “Kentucky Academic Standards for Social Studies” (Dated December 2022 but actually only finally approved on September 5, 2023) never mentions the Battle of the Bulge, the Battle of Remagen or even the term "Nazi."

Pearl Harbor, Midway, Iwo Jima, the Atom Bomb and Hiroshima are all unmentioned, as well.

It's disrespectful and embarrassing all at once.

May I suggest the Herald-Leader look into the story of Kentucky’s horribly disrespectful social studies standards? Members of the Greatest Generation deserve no less.
