What would our new president think about Kentucky’s social studies standards?
According to WLKY, newly inaugurated President Joe Biden gave the Oval Office a slight makeover today. WLKY says:
“A bust of Cesar Chavez, the labor leader and civil rights activist, is nestled among an array of framed family photos displayed on a desk behind the new president.
Benjamin Franklin peers down at Biden from a portrait on a nearby wall.”
I wonder how our new president would feel if he knew that neither Chavez nor Franklin is ever mentioned in Kentucky’s current, and very incomplete, social studies standards.
In fact, the standards don’t contain the terms “Labor Union” or “Labor Movement,” either. I’ll bet that would raise Chavez’s eyebrows.
By the way, here’s a little history note for you. According to the Franklin Institute, Franklin did not propose the turkey instead of the bald eagle as the national bird. However, the Franklin Institute does say Franklin wrote that the turkey is “a much more respectable Bird, and withal a true original Native of America...He is besides, though a little vain & silly, a Bird of Courage.”
So, we’ll let Franklin’s courageous turkey have the last word here.
