Courier-Journal just doesn't get it

Despite Wednesday’s preposterous Courier-Journal article, entitled “Coal industry, environmentalists clash at EPA hearing in Frankfort,” the sea of blue coal shirts and impassioned cheers from coal activists made abundantly clear that those supporting Kentucky coal and local governance over our most prized natural resource far outnumbered those supporting the EPA’s unilateral encroachment of our energy sector.

By all accounts, pro-coal Kentuckians for state sovereignty were vociferous and aplenty, outnumbering detractors by a margin as large as five to one. Even the Lexington Herald-Leader reported that a crowd of “hundreds” rallied for coal immediately before the hearing, while a measly 75 showed up for the competing EPA rally.

Although nearly every state legislator that spoke at the event – Democrat and Republican alike – rose in non-partisan support for our coal industry, Wednesday’s article focused on the sole Kentucky legislator who decided to back the mid-Atlantic bureaucrats at the EPA over her home state.

This warped coverage is a disservice to concerned citizens in urban Kentucky areas who wish to understand the momentous battle being fought in our eastern Kentucky coal fields. It’s a matter of a way of life for so many Kentuckians.

Bluegrass citizens understand this. Clearly the Courier-Journal does not.
