Dr. John Garen to speak on Obamacare on Thursday

This coming Thursday, September 27th, the chair of the Bluegrass Institute’s Board of Scholars, Dr. John Garen, will discuss some economic concerns with America’s current healthcare system, as well as proposed solutions from both centrally planned and free market perspectives.

Dr. Garen has been the Gatton Endowed Professor of Economics at UK since 1999. He attained his BA in economics from the University of Washington and his doctorate from Ohio State University in 1982. Since then he has authored dozens of peer-reviewed publications for journals such as Econometrica, the Journal of Political Economy, and for the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. His topics of interest range from the cost of government services, to federal spending and smoke-free laws. Dr. Garen has served as an economist for the commonwealth since 1988 and is a passionate member of numerous Kentucky organizations.
At the Bluegrass Institute, Dr. Garen has served as the chair of our Board of Scholars since its inception earlier this year, and has worked closely with the Institute on numerous releases. In 2011, Dr. Garen authored “An Unsustainable Path: The Past and Future of Kentucky Medicaid Spending,” a report published by the Bluegrass Institute on the rising costs of Medicaid in the commonwealth. Most recently, Dr. Garen authored “Insurance Exchanges in Kentucky and the Health Care Reform Bill,” a report on how the PPACA will affect Kentuckians.
Dr. Garen has been heavily involved in studying the relationship between government and healthcare in recent years and has voiced numerous concerns with the unintended consequences of government intervention into America’s healthcare system.
On Thursday, Dr. Garen will shed some light on that very topic, including his concerns with the PPACA, and alternative solutions to America’s healthcare woes.
