Education Week: Common Core Seen Falling Short in High School Math

Per Education Week:

• “…even some of the most ardent supporters of the Common Core State Standards agree that the high school math standards have weaknesses and should be revisited.”

• “One expert even claims that a standard is completely missing from the published document—one that was there in the drafts.”

• “…several mathematicians have argued the high school standards don't contain enough content, in terms of both breadth and depth.”

The article goes on to explain that creation of the high school Common Core math standards was rushed.

Finally, Education Week notes something that I have been critically pointing out for several years:

“There's no formal mechanism in place for a wholesale review of the common core….”

This is the biggest problem of all. It was very foolish to think that the Common Core would be perfect out of the box. But, no one left an expert servicing team in place to collect feedback and develop updates. There is no way, right now, to fix the national Common Core State Standards. If states do it on their own, as Kentucky is currently in the process of doing, then the Common Core becomes “uncommon,” which basically torpedoes the entire reason for having these standards.
