Hensley recognized for education performance with Grissom Award

The Bluegrass Institute already knew Dr. Dewey Hensley was a star.

Several years ago we blogged about remarkable performance at the J.B. Atkinson Elementary school in Louisville. Atkinson had been Louisville’s poorest performing elementary school when then principal Dewey Hensley took over. In a few years, Atkinson had made remarkable progress. Renamed the J.B. Atkinson Academy, the school truly was more than an elementary. Aside from greatly improved academic performance from its heavily poor and minority students, Atkinson had become host to extension classrooms from the University of Louisville’s College of Education. It was an incredible powerhouse of education reform, and Hensley was the leader who facilitated it all.

Today, Hensley was been honored for his many outstanding efforts in education with a 2014 Dr. Johnnie Grissom Award from the Kentucky Board of Education.

The award recognizes those who exhibit leadership, commitment and service to promote high student achievement through instructional equity and in closing the achievement gap for all children.

So, hats off to Dr. Hensley! But, it’s no surprise to us at BIPPS!
