Ky. Auditor - Audits point to lack of accountability in some Ky. school districts
Kentucky Auditor of Public Accounts Adam Edelen made an outstanding presentation to the Kentucky Legislature’s Interim Joint Committee on Education yesterday, and WYMT TV picked up on the story here.
The auditor overviewed the disturbing results of 14 education-related audits that his office has recently performed in various local Kentucky school districts.
One of the auditor’s key points per WYMT:
“…lack of accountability and transparency are among the common themes in 14 school district special examinations his office has conducted in the past year.”
The worst audit so far was in the Dayton Independent School District, where the superintendent abused the financial system to the tune of about $224,000. The auditor said yesterday that this case is heading for a criminal investigation.
Several years ago the Bluegrass Institute began to raise questions about the functioning of local school boards and their evaluation of their superintendents. It resulted in our Rewarding Failure series, which audits now confirm were on target with concerns that local school board interactions with their superintendents were problematic.
