Senator Dan Seum sounds off on performance of Jefferson County Schools

The Kentucky Senate’s Education Committee today heard – and approved – Kentucky Senator Dan Seum’s Senate Bill 216 to establish the right of students to attend their neighborhood school. One intention of the bill is to end the busing madness in Louisville.

As the vote was being conducted on this bill, one committee member (who is apparently blind to the on-going mess in Jefferson County Schools and elsewhere) made some amazingly naive comments about how local leaders always know best and school decisions should always be left to them.

Being intimately familiar with the goings on in Louisville, Sen. Seum wasn’t fooled by that nonsense. He said:

“I think my school board members have completely and totally failed my children in Jefferson County.”

That’s not quite as dramatic as the recent Kentucky Commissioner of Education’s comment that some of the things going on in Jefferson County amount to “educational genocide,” but it’s just about as direct – and just as on target.
