Ed. Sec. Heiner on charter school legislation
Kentucky’s Secretary of the Education and Workforce Development Cabinet, Hal Heiner, did an interview about what Kentucky needs with charter school legislation recently with CN|2 cable news.
Heiner pointed to the obvious need for charter schools in Kentucky to help counter the serious achievement gaps that exist in the state’s traditional public school system. This has been one of the major disappointments with the Kentucky Education Reform Act of 1990, which was specifically supposed to solve this problem but never has.
Heiner says he doesn’t see any need to only do a pilot charter school law because with other 43 state charter school models to learn from, he thinks we can go right into statewide implementation by using the best of the best that other states already have developed.
