Free enterprise is needed in education!

In a recent commentary, Andrew Coulson of the Cato Institute makes a great point about why we haven't seen innovations in education like we have in other sectors:

The same free enterprise system that has given us Google, Starbucks, and Apple works in education, too—if we let it. This system works for businesses through several key conditions: freedom to innovate, consumer choice, competition between providers, price signals, and the ability to distribute profits to investors.

Kentucky policy makers should read this commentary and take it to heart. The Commonwealth is one of a handful of states that doesn't have school choice legislation. While school choice is not a silver bullet for education reform, it is one step toward fostering freedom to innovate, competition, and consumer choice.
