Kentucky home schoolers shut down attempt to violate their privacy

This past summer the Home School Legal Defense Association jumped into a nasty attempt by Gallatin County Public Schools to intrude into the homes of local home schools.

During the summer, a letter from the Gallatin County Public School District went out to all of the county’s homeschooling parents. The letter threatened a number of extra-legal actions not allowed by Kentucky law. The letter included forms asking for more information than the law requires and asked for far more information about scheduling and records-keeping than the state requires, as well. The district said it would be inspecting each home school, as well.

Home schoolers are not easy to intimidate, however, and they quickly got the HSLDA involved with the situation. By the end of August, Gallatin County Schools had sent out new letters apologizing for the earlier letter and telling home school parents to ignore that earlier letter.

Score one for home schooling parents. Score a “Novice” for arrogant school personnel who didn’t know the limits of their authority and thought they could go around intimidating people.
