Bluegrass Institute issues statement on court decision regarding new school choice law, opportunity accounts
The Bluegrass Institute for Public Policy Solutions, Kentucky’s free market think tank, released the following statement in response to Franklin Circuit Court Judge Phillip Shepherd’s decision ruling school choice unconstitutional:
This decision isn’t only a legal defeat in a courtroom, it’s a real loss for thousands of students across the commonwealth whose families are being denied access to the kind of educational opportunities needed for future success.
While we’re confident the decision will be overturned on appeal, it’s disappointing that Judge Shepherd completely ignored the will of the legislature by denying Kentuckians the opportunity to make voluntary tax credit contributions to nonprofit organizations for use in opening doors to needed services and better educational opportunities for thousands of students.
This decision also allows ideological opponents of educational freedom to further delay access to needed opportunities for Kentucky’s neediest children and families.
